Mom, I love you (but you’re fired) – Album: The Grateful Life
…Many years ago, I was in an office of a music executive, who was walking me through his version of the music business. He was very confident and very successful. I sat and listened…
All of a sudden, his mother burst through the door and gave him a stern talking to. (I’m not making this up!) The only thing that didn’t happen was her grabbing his ear and pulling him out of the office.
She abruptly left.
Embarrassed silence ensued.
So there was that…we both thought.
I quietly thanked him for his time and made my way out the door with a song idea.
Mom I Love You (but you’re fired)
That’s me playing my chimpanzee piano style on the track, along with the usual musical suspects. But, it is worth noting that my friend Jon Pousette Dart was kind enough to play slide guitar on it. Man is he soulful…
Thanks Jon…
Thanks fellas…
Thanks Mom…
Lyrics
“ Mom I love you(but you’re fired)” d. barrett
Mom this is so hard to tell you
after all you’ve given to me
years of dedication
why you practically built this company…
but you’ve heard of downsizing
like when you shrunk my shirts
I’ve made a decision
and as much as this hurts
MOM I LOVE YOU BUT YOU’RE FIRED
take a few minutes to collect your things
no no, there’s no need to hurry
Security will lead you out
we changed the locks, don’t worry
It’s a global market
‘n your jobs overseas
it’ll triple our profits
Wall Street is pleased…
MOM I LOVE YOU BUT YOU’RE FIRED
now you’re taking this too personally
can’t we still be friends?
you’ll bounce back, I know you will…
(and did mention?. . you lost your pension)
so grab your coat and hat over there
and be sure to say hi to Dad
here’s a few dollars for a taxi
‘n try not to look so sad
In time you’ll see the wisdom
of these cost cutting moves
some are gonna win
some are gonna lose…
MOM I LOVE YOU
Like my BMW
MOM I LOVE YOU…
BUT YOU’RE FIRED
