Doug Towey

This is an unblinking one.

My friend Doug Towey, who was so instrumental with CBS and my song One Shining Moment, drew me to my guitar and this song.  He was generous, amazingly intelligent, funny, but always with a light touch.

When my daughters were young, we brought them to NYC, and he & his wife Helen asked us to stay a night at their place on Long Island.  In the morning, before anyone stirred, I wandered downstairs to watch the sunrise.  The memory stuck.

A few years later he got sick.  Real sick.  I remembered that morning before dawn…and wrote this one for him.  Miss him each & every day…

Numbered Days david barrett
These days are numbered
count them if you will
slip through your fingers
slip until…
Alone in the parlor
tick of the clock
pick off the petals
she loves me not
I forgot this blink of an eye…
THESE NUMBERED DAYS
NOTHING STAYS
NUMBERED DAYS…goodbye
It’s a house of slumber
sleepwalk the halls
rattling the teacups
until they fall…
When the spell is broken
the dream comes due
turning the evening stars
midnight blue
Midnight you…like geese as they fly…
THESE NUMBERED DAYS
NOTHING STAYS
NUMBERED DAYS…goodbye
